Cloud Computing Trends 2018: Shine with a Silver Lining

Cloud Computing Trends 2018: Shine With A Silver Lining

Before we even know it, 2017 is slowly hazing out of the calendars. Phew, we are again at a time when technology trends tend to create a huge intrigue about business objectives for the next year. CIO and IT executives across the globe are now attentively planning out how to use technology to meet their goals in 2018.

Harnessing all our sunny attention is one particular thing- the Omnipresent Cloud! It is no longer just a tool, and organizations are finding the right way to use cloud computing to accomplish their business milestones. Clouds have had the power to bring some significant changes in the past few years. We have seen its evolution from being ‘new’, personal cloud storage to organizations operating entirely out of the cloud. It emerged as an ace trend in 2017 to streamline business.

Cloud trends have a peculiarity- if you keep just looking at it, they will evaporate. To grab the mist, organizations must act sooner. As the initial panic-stricken “Oh, What is that? And how will clouds benefit my organization?” phase wanes out, the industry is surfing on the second giant wave of Cloud Computing.

Letting the numbers from Forrester speak:

  • In 2018, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google and Microsoft Cloud Services will capture 76% of all platform revenue, that will continue to increase to 80% by 2020
  • By 2018, the total global public cloud market will be $178B (a rise from $146B in 2017) and will grow at a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 22%

And the most important of all is:

  • 50% of organizations will depend on at least one public cloud platform to drive digital transformation and meet consumer expectations

Cloud Trends That You Need to Drench In

Rise of SaaS, PaaS and IaaS Solutions

It is a no-brainer that with the acceleration in cloud computing adoption, cloud services and solutions like Software As A Service (SaaS), Platform As A Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure As  A Service (IaaS) will drift higher.

Out of the three, SaaS currently captures the largest cloud market, and PaaS has the highest rate of adoption. With PaaS solutions, it is easy for companies to develop and manage apps without the hassle of building and maintaining an infrastructure for the same. Organizations will make it simpler for end users to access services with seamless integration of SaaS, IaaS or PaaS in their operations.

Hybrid Cloud Solutions

Security and privacy are two major inhibitors in widespread cloud adoption and deployment. Adoption of hybrid cloud solutions will be on a rise as it enhances cloud’s impact on organizations for unified access mechanism to control all data. Hybrid cloud solutions are a safer bet too.

Cloud Security

This year, we have witnessed some of the worst breaches in the form of WannaCry, Goldeneye, WikiLeaks CIA Vault 7, and Equifax. Security is a nagging issue for cloud solutions. Though it hampered the adoption of this technology previously, things are improving at a faster rate now.

Security analysts will have to be on their toes to thwart attacks and businesses will be required to invest more wisely in setting up cybersecurity defense mechanisms well. Cloud services will play a significant role with managed security providers to implement end-to-end safety measures for customers.

IoT and Clouds

Internet of Small and Big Things (IoT) and Cloud are inseparable for life. As connected devices find more space in day-to-day lives, cloud usage will continue to grow. For organizations serving in this segment, it will be a goldmine of opportunities to radically innovate with real-time data analytics and cloud computing.
